You may think monitoring your cat's eating habits is not necessary, and that a lovably large cat is a healthy and happy cat. But a sensible diet and healthy body weight is just as important for your cat as it is for you. Giving your furry companion excessive amounts at meal time may make him/her feel more content. But it will also give him/her excessive body fat that can cause problems for your kitty such as diabetes, respiratory system problems, and can make it difficult for your cat to clean himself/herself properly which can lead to bladder and kidney infections. Here are a few tips on helping your kitty lose weight and be happy and healthy.

Follow the package instructions.
Most of the time you can find feeding instructions on the package that your cat's food is purchased in. Even if you can't find instructions on the bag or label, the typical amount suggested for a cat that needs to lose weight is 1/2 cup per day. Usually a 1/4 cup in the morning, and again when you eat your evening meal is just the right amount. This may seem like very little to you, and maybe even to your cat if he/she is used to eating all that he/she desires. But keep in mind that your cat's stomach is not very big.

Read the label.
There are many menu choices available at your local grocery store or veterinary clinic. it is always best to use whatever brand and formula your cat's vet recommends. A cat knows what is good for them, and after a few weeks of eating the food available at the clinic your cat will most likely refuse to eat everything else. If you choose to feed your cat a store brand, make sure that you purchase one that is formulated to fit your cat's needs and age. If your feline friend is already overweight, use a weight loss formula.

Buy your cat toys!
This will ensure that your cat gets the daily exercise she needs to be healthy. Catnip toys are a great way to encourage your feline friend to get frisky. Buying your cat some furniture with perches, cubby holes and dangling toys will also encourage your cat to climb, bat, and play. Putting some catnip on the top will get her climbing juices flowing.

play with your cat.
If your cat is obese, she will probably voice her opinion about her new diet plan. giving her extra affection, talking to her and playing with her will increase her sense of love and and help her with the transition. It will increase his/her level of fun, which will make him/her more happy in the long run.

Although I do not own any pets at this time (our dog passed a couple of months ago), I do appreciate the tips you provided. I think sometimes we as pet owners tend to forget that our animals can expericence the same problems we as humans do. Therefore, it's just as important to look after thier health as well as we look after our own.
